Carisoprodol is a muscle relaxer that is made in the United States by Meda Pharmaceuticals, Inc. In the U.S., it is sold under the Soma brand name, but may be referred to as Sanoma or Carisoma in the United Kingdom. The formulation of carisoprodol varies. It can be made with only the one active ingredient, or it can be mixed with aspirin or codeine and caffeine. If the latter variety interests you, look for Soma Compound with Codeine.
When prescribed carisoprodol, take the tablets by mouth, and follow the prescription exactly. Carisoprodol can be taken with or without food. If you experience stomach upset, it may be relieved by taking this medication with a meal. The typical prescription recommends that this drug is taken three times a day. Do not take more or less carisoprodol that your doctor has recommended on the prescription. When a dose is missed, wait until the next time you are supposed to take your medication if it is fairly close to the next dosing time. Do not double up on a missed dose. If you have any further questions, make sure that you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Carisoprodol does have some side effects. Minor side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, clumsiness, headache, fast heart rate, upset stomach, vomiting, and skin rash. Many people do not experience these side effects or only experience one or two. As your body adjusts to the carisoprodol, they will usually go away after a few days. If these side effects do not go away soon after you begin taking carisoprodol, contact your doctor. More serious side effects include difficulty breathing, fever, weakness, and burning in the eyes. If you experience any of these more serious conditions, contact your doctor immediately. These adverse reactions can be quite serious if allowed to continue.
This medication was originally developed by pharmacologists at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in the 1950's. At first, the scientists thought that they had created a new medication with antiseptic properties, but later found that the muscle relaxing properties were more beneficial. The brand name used to market carisoprodol provides a few interesting facts. Soma was also used to name a drug used in ancient India. Research indicates that ancient Soma may have had hallucinogenic, stimulant, and narcotic effects. Aldous Huxley's Brave New World also featured fictional drug called Soma. Today's carisoprodol offers a safe muscle relaxer when used as directed when compared to these ancient and fictional drugs.
